Transport emissions on the rise

Traffic congestion in and around Fellgate (Jarrow) is a significant and ongoing issue, particularly during peak periods and following breakdowns or accidents. This is well documented by the local community. Several online sources, such as Facebook, the local newspapers and Traffic News, have posted photos of severe congestion at Key junction points. The main factors identified for congestion include outward-bound commuter dependency, over-capacity junctions, restricted access points such as single-lane bridge and limited estate entrances and exits.

According to public reports and the council own air quality annual status documents, pollution along the A184 and A194 is primarily attributed to high volumes of vehicle emissions, particularly from private cars, busses, and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) servicing the nearby port, industrial areas and a key route to the cities. The South Tyneside Air Quality Annual Status Report (ASR) 2024 highlights ongoing high levels of NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) and PM (particulate matter).

Key Junctions and Risk Areas
A194 from Lindisfarne roundabout to White Mare Pool; Fellgate slip road onto the A194; A194 Mill Lane roundabout onto B1306 junction; Fellgate Avenue – Hedworth Lane junction; A185 Mill Lane junction. With proposed residential developments (e.g., 1,500 new homes), daily traffic trips could increase by up to 3,000, exacerbating delays, risks of local gridlock, and a significant risk to public health unless major interventions are adopted.
These are just a few pictures of the on going traffic congestion.
